This week Meaghan and I watch another film for the Halloween month of October. Ava’s Possessions is attempting to be a campy possession movie that doesn’t really have very much possession in it. It’s some weird memento “piece the event together” type of thing that is dumb, the “twist” is dumb, everything is dumb. It’s trying so hard to be campy but everything is just bad, bad lighting, bad sets, bad acting (ugh the lead…), bad costumes. It misses the mark in every category. There are two redeeming qualities, the girl who wanted to get possessed (and their “summoning” scene), and the short dude they got to play her boyfriend/stalker. The last thirty minutes are actually good but make no sense without the first hour, it’s just not worth it. This film is a hard pass, which is a disappointment because they actually have some pretty decent actors who fall flat because of the terrible the lead actress.

This week Meaghan and I decided to watch a movie that exemplified the Halloween spirit. Children of the Corn looks like it was made on a shoestring budget (even for 1984). Everything is bad, the props are terrible, the visual effects are inconsistent, the children can’t act, and the plot pacing is slow, among many other issues. But, Children of the Corn is about a demon that “walks behind the rowz” and commands children to kill anyone who is an adult. How can you not love that dumb story? The best part is the unlucky couple dragged into the middle of this whole thing. I love everything cliché that happens in this dumb film. Listen to us hate and love this movie at the same time.

This week Meaghan and I “recenter” ourselves with a 1 & 3/4ths star movie called McCanick. Personally, I was hoping that the entire film would be a poorly executed tongue-in-cheek play off the word “Mechanic”, but instead it was just a bunch of poorly edited scenes that last too long. The only positive is that both of us are reminded just how bad a film can be. The fact this film has 1 & 3/4ths stars makes me really question the validity of the star system; who finishes this film and gives it anything but Zero stars??
